**New from September 2014** Beechen Cliff School offers English Language and English Literature at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. The Faculty of English is high achieving, with results at all Key Stages well above the national average. We are committed to sharing our passion for the subject, providing a stimulating, dynamic and academically rigorous experience of English for all our students.
Pupils are taught English in their tutor groups in Year 7. In Years 8 and 9 pupils needing extra support in basic skills are taught in set 3. All other pupils are banded by ability in two parallel tiers.
**All pupils in Year 10 will sit the Cambridge International GCSE in English (First Language) and English Literature in 2016**. A love of literature is fostered through the enthusiasm and expertise of our specialist staff, an emphasis on personalised learning through independent research and plenty of opportunities for discussion, as we place a high value on each student's personal response.
Stimulating creativity and thought beyond the curriculum is an important focus for the English Faculty. We encourage students to enter national creative and critical competitions, and value the achievement and participation of all our students. Every year we award two subject prizes for academic achievement. We share with the pupils of Beechen Cliff School our own love of reading and we encourage discussion. Every year, the English Faculty joins with the Library in participating in the Carnegie Award Shadowing Scheme. Our Carnegie Shadowing group contributes to the judging of this prestigious children's book award by voting for their favourite of short-listed books and posting their own reviews on the Carnegie website.
