Year Eight Course Outline
This year you will build on the skills you learnt in Year 7 and learn some new ones.
You will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts such as: poems, novels, short stories and newspapers, and will understand how the writers have made their choices to create effects.
You will write in different ways for different audiences, for a variety of purposes. Creative writing will extend your ability to use your imagination and write interesting stories.
There will also be Speaking and Listening tasks and language work throughout the year.

Year 8 begins by looking back at the history of the English Language and how it has developed over time. As part of this students will read extracts of texts from Old and Middle English and consider why and how the language has developed over time. earn about some different
Next, students study a scheme of work focused around The Book Thief to develop their understanding of the novel form and applying context. As part of this scheme students will develop their analytical reading skills and creative writing skills.
To develop their understanding of genre and 19th century texts, year 8 study a scheme of work focused on the Crime genre and trace its development from Arthur Conan Doyle's work to contemporary literature.
Next students study a scheme focused on the Media and develop their non-fiction reading and writing skills.
Finally, students end with a focus on characters- looking at a range of heroes and villains from Shakespeare's work to modern texts.
