Year 9 schemes
Year Nine Course Outline
This is an important year as you will be working hard to prepare for the move up to the GCSEs next year.
You will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction, including poems, novels, travel writing and a play by Shakespeare. You will study the effects achieved by writers and form your own viewpoints.
You will also write widely for a range of audiences and learn to vary your style to suit the purpose of your writing. You will be encouraged to be imaginative and accurate in all your work.
There will be opportunities for speaking and listening and drama work throughout the year.
Students in year 9 begin by reading a range of extracts from the Gothic genre to develop their understanding of 19th century writing and the ways that genre develops over time.
As a foray into GCSE skills, year 9 study Of Mice and Men with a focus on developing their understanding of character, writer's purpose, structural elements, and the importance of context.
Next, students study Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare with a focus on analysis, acting and writing their own dramatic pieces.
Moving forward in time, students study a range of texts focused on 'Other Worlds' with a focus on features of Science Fiction and Dystopian writing.
As a part of developing students' independence, they will complete a research project focused on an area of Dystopian or Science Fiction literature.
Finally, year 9 will finish with a module on non-fiction writing to argue and persuade as students create their own product and market it, making pitches in the style of Dragon's Den.
